Managers and management are unavoidable in modern
organizations and society. To give you a basic picture, I must first define
what management is, what managers do, and how people become managers
Management –a definition : Management can simply be defined as the
integration and coordination of resources to move effectively toward a desired
objective. Here, we shall look at other definitions of management, but
for now, let us look at each part of the definition.
OBJECTIVES:
All organizations have some mission that includes their
reasons for existence. To be effective ,
orgnisations must have targets and
objectives toward which managers hope to use to move the organization forward
EFFECTIVENESS:
Effective management is the heart of all managerial
activities. Effectiveness refers to how well the organization reaches its
objective over a period of time. Effectiveness stresses the long-range continuing nature of
management. The ability to change , adapt ,reach objectives ,and serve its
mission is of prime importance to any organization .Effectiveness is easy to
understand when contrasted with efficiency .Efficiency is a short –term measure
of how well an organization uses `its
resources. Efficiency measures are `frequently used to determine whether the
organization is meeting its short-term targets .
RESOURCES:
Basically, resources are what managers must use efficiently and
effectively ,they include the 4+1,which
is the 4M+ 1.the four M is man ,money , material and machine .While the +1 is
information. The firm needs capital and human resources , technology etc .The
nature of the resources varies from one organization to another
COORDINATION AND INTEGRATION:
The resources listed
above must be bonded into the organization .By coordinating man ,material ,money and machine ,plus
information .The organization must serve its clients in such a way that it move
into the actualization of its objectives.
WHY MANAGERS ARE IMPORTANT AND WHO THEY ARE
Organisations do not
run themselves individual do. To ensure that necessary activities are
performed, and coordinated ,managers must perform and are very much needed .Essentially
,organization are built by managers organized ,directed and controlled by
managers .Managers also operate the organization according to plans .All organization require
managers to function effectively .However , the larger the organization , the
more critical it managers are.
DEFINITION:
Managers are persons who coordinate activities in order to
move an organization towards its objectives.
BECOMING A MANAGER:
There are several ways of becoming a manager ,some are included
below.
1) To be chosen by a high level manager or executive .often
the manager is someone who has
special knowledge and talent in a particular area who
has long service and experience.
2) To be chosen by the consent of the governed .A person
selected by group of people to represent them and take
responsibility for performing certain managerial activities.
